Frequently Asked Questions

What does at-will employment mean?

Almost every state is an at-will state, meaning employers can generally fire employees for any reason or no reason. However, there are important exceptions: employers cannot fire you for discriminatory reasons (race, sex, religion, etc.), in retaliation for protected activity, or in violation of an employment contract.

How long do I have to file an employment discrimination claim?

You generally must file a charge with the EEOC within 300 days of the discriminatory act (180 days for some state claims). After the EEOC issues a right-to-sue letter, you have 90 days to file a lawsuit. Acting quickly is important — consult an attorney as soon as possible.
